IEP and Special Education

MVYPS Special Education Department provides specialized instruction and/or related services for students meeting eligibility due to an educational disability in the least restrictive environment through a continuum of services/supports.

Special Education services are provided to eligible students aged 3 to 18 years, or until they graduate from High School. (Secondary school programs provide necessary services until a student’s 22nd birthday or high school graduation, whichever occurs first.)

Specific services are determined based upon the needs of individual students. Each school/district within MVYPS provides services based on their own educational model within these guidelines. For students that require more intensive supports and interventions, the Districts utilize a Shared Service Program model.

MVPYS Early Childhood Special Education (age 3 -5)

The Early Learning Department on Martha’s Vineyard provides developmental screenings, consultation, response to intervention, developmental evaluations and direct special education services for Island preschoolers. Individualized Education Plans are developed for students who have been evaluated and determined to meet eligibility for special education supports. These may include special education, social skills support, physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech and language therapy. Additional supports may include a teacher of the deaf, teacher of the blind, orientation and mobility support or augmentative communication support. These services may be provided in the community preschools or at a center based location.
